Grants
Since 2004 the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation (JLPF) has granted more than $256,900 to programs that help empower and educate children and help women develop essential leadership skills.
The JLPF conducts an annual grant cycle each Spring. During this grant cycle, the Foundation requests funding proposals for programs that support the mission of the Junior League of Phoenix (JLP). The Foundation board evaluates and votes on each proposal and awards monetary grants based largely on the total dollar amount raised over the past 12 months. Grant recipients are notified at the Junior League of Phoenix May Annual Celebration.
The JLP programs below are past recipients of Foundation grants.
St. Vincent de Paul
The JLP Foundation grant provided support to JLP's St. Vincent de Paul Community Program. St. Vincent de Paul provides healthy, fresh food used in daily meals in their dining halls and distributes food to community members in fresh food boxes. With the JLPF contribution and the strength of JLP volunteers St Vincent de Paul was able to prepare 3500 meals everyday and, on average, JLP volunteers were able to harvest and process more than 300 pounds of produce per shift.
Harvest Compassion Center
The Foundation was proud to support the partnership of Harvest Compassion Center and JLP. With the grant from the Foundation, HCC was able to purchase freezers to house fresh items that they are now receiving from local grocery stores in partnership with St. Mary's Food Bank. Foundation funds were also used to create a kids corner at HCC. JLP volunteers assist clients in difficult times by assisting them with shopping for groceries, hygiene products and clothing at the center.
Healthfest
Arizona ranks 15th worst in the country for food insecurity, the obesity rate has more than doubled over the last 15 years in the state, and the USDA's "Food Desert" locator shows 55 areas in Maricopa County alone where people have low access to a supermarket or large grocery store. Healthfest, in partnership with the City of Phoenix, is an all encompassing free, health and wellness event. Families participate in interactive exhibits and demonstrations that promote nutrition, fitness, physical and mental health, and provide them with resources that they can take home to incorporate what they have learned into their everyday lives. The event also offers free immunizations and screenings including but not limited to, HIV, cancer, vision, dental, and prenatal ultrasounds.
Kids in the Kitchen (KITK)
The JLP helps to empower youth and families to adopt healthy habits and reverse the growth of childhood obesity in Maricopa County. KITK programming helps increase children’s awareness of the nutrition in everyday foods, improves the quality of healthy food that kids eat by showing them easy and tasty ways to eat better, and increases the amount of exercise that kids do during their daily routine.
Raising Our Children's Knowledge by Educating Through Science (ROCKETS)
It is estimated that Arizona will see a 23 percent increase in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs by 2024(1). However, many employers worry that students are not going to graduate with the skills they need to meet the growing demand. The ROCKETS Teacher Launch Seminar is a half-day training that provides pre-K and elementary school teachers, science educators, and after-school program educators from districts around the Valley, with non-stop, hands-on science activities, enriching the lives of more than 1,000 students each year.
Organizational Development Institute (ODI)
Recent studies show that women make up only 21% of C-suite positions, and only 22% of Senior VP positions(2). The ODI hosted by the Association of Junior Leagues, International is a 3-day leadership development training that helps develop capacity in upcoming leaders of Junior Leagues around the country. Many of the women who attended the ODI have stated that this type of leadership development training has not only encouraged them to apply for leadership positions within the Junior League, but also in the workplace.
JLP Mission & Training
The Foundation awards grants in support of the JLP mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
